Challenge:
The email migration was the most complex component of this project, and a significant source of traffic and revenue. The potential consequences of mishandled data migration, poor customer satisfaction, or decrease in utilization, were of significant concern. To complicate matters, Embarq users would later need to be integrated with legacy CenturyTel users due to a corporate merger.
Strategy:
Synacor took a leading position in the migration planning, beginning with requirements gathering all the way through to launch. Before deployment, Synacor developed scripts to migrate email, address books and settings, and reskinned Zimbra to look and feel like an Embarq branded property. Synacor provided training, support, and marketing assistance, such as pre-migration information for users, interstitial pages during the migration, and post launch messaging.

Results:
All user accounts and legacy data were migrated successfully from Earthlink to Synacor, and then seamlessly merged with CenturyTel users without disruption of service, and with minimal impact to technical support services. Customers of the new email platform still had access to all of their old email, plus their prior settings and preferences were still intact. Today CenturyLink enjoys over 60% email utilization.
