About Buffalo

Buffalo has a rich history, enduring traditions, a strong arts/cultural community and a unique geographic setting. As such, it is a destination for those in the know.

Greater Buffalo encompasses the City of Buffalo and all of Erie County, New York, with an estimated population of 954,000. If you include the entire Buffalo Niagara area, a bi-national region comprising eight counties of Western New York State and the Niagara Peninsula of Ontario, Canada, it goes up to two million. As an international trade center, the region accommodates 38% of the total trade conducted between the United States and Canada. The region boasts a highly productive workforce of more than 750,000. Every year 20,000 students graduate from the region's 30 colleges and universities, where more than 100,000 students are enrolled. (Source: Buffalo Niagara Enterprise)

With its literal treasure trove of gorgeous homes, beautiful surrounding communities, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, a world-class contemporary art museum, the city has also recently been cited as the number one arts destination among mid-sized cities. (Source: AmericanStyle Magazine, 2006).

Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect and designer of New York's Central Park, created Buffalo's large park system. The Olmsted Buffalo park system, which was begun in 1868, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as are many other structures and neighborhoods.

The city of Buffalo is home to many buildings designed by leading American architects, such as Louis Sullivan and H.H. Richardson. Buffalo has more Frank Lloyd Wright buildings than any other city except Chicago. These include the Darwin Martin Complex, George Barton House, William Heath House, Walter Davidson House, and the Graycliff Estate.

There is also a thriving performing and visual arts community. The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and myriad professional theater companies provide quality cultural entertainment. The Burchfield-Penney Art Center is a hub for regional art, both contemporary and historical. Many smaller art galleries and musical performance spaces and programs, a science museum and historical society are just a few more of the benefits that Buffalo has to offer.
