Happy employees are productive employees… Find good people and then give them the freedom to do the work they were hired to do. There's no doubt about it: Synacorians (as we call ourselves) work hard. But we play hard too. Life at Synacor is easy to handle because of the casual atmosphere in the office and the fun-loving attitude of the employees—from the newest entry-level Synacorian to the CEO.

This relaxed work culture is part of the reason Synacor is consistently a finalist (and a multiple winner!) for the Corporate Culture Award from InfoTech Niagara, a local information technology industry trade group here in Buffalo. What is the Cyberculture Award? Put simply, it's an award which recognizes the organization that exudes a positive, productive, tech-savvy, and encouraging work environment.

The way we look at it, how can a person be really creative when wearing shoes that pinch or ties that constrict? We think the notion "someone can't act professional unless they're wearing a suit" is bunk, and our happy, highly-productive workforce is proof you can wear jeans and sneakers and still produce a world-class product!

We enjoy java… and espresso… and snacks!
Some people are Starbucks fans, but we think you haven't had great coffee until you've tried Buffalo's own SPoT Coffee. Synacorians are treated daily to gourmet roasts, and if you need that extra shot of energy, try the espresso/cappuccino machine, gifted to the employees by an appreciative vice president! Cool, huh? If coffee's not your thing, we have food, soda, and ice cream machines that are subsidized by the company—every item costs a mere quarter!

There's a lake RIGHT outside our office, and we gravitate to it like frogs to, well, water.
Synacor's headquarters is located along Buffalo's waterfront in the Erie Basin Marina. Taking a few minutes to enjoy the serenity of nature is as easy as walking 1,000 feet or so to the water. We even have a lakefront gazebo with wi-fi connection! When was the last time you took a webinar while watching sailboats float by?

Synacorians like food. A lot.
It's a good thing we call Buffalo home, since there are 1,400 bars and restaurants in the Greater Buffalo/Niagara area. Yes, 1,400! Many days, employees take the opportunity to relax and eat lunch together at several restaurants within walking distance of the office. If we're in the middle of a great working session and can't bear to interrupt it, we simply take advantage of a bevy of eateries who deliver straight to our front desk. Lastly, there is such a thing as a free lunch; Synacor often sponsors catered lunches and breakfasts to celebrate important milestones.

Adventure, you say? We have those too!
Synacor isn't just about life in the office, though. We know all work and no play makes Synacorians very dull boys and girls. How do we let off steam? We have company-sponsored gatherings at the aforementioned 1,400 bars and restaurants! Sometimes, especially after spending a while at one of these gatherings, we—badly—do karaoke, and we even have a yearly "Synacorian Idol" singing competition. Then there are the bowling parties: you haven’t seen funny until you’ve seen a bunch of your co-workers try to bowl. It isn’t pretty… We also enjoy our summer picnic, where our extended Synacor family (including significant others, children, and friends) come together to take pleasure in each other's company; and a year-end holiday party, complete with dinner and dancing. Just because we have a casual dress code at work, that doesn't mean we don't like to get dressed up and party every now and then! Unofficial gatherings are common too, from impromptu happy hours to "Taco Phil's Mighty Adventure," an annual day-long visit to each Mighty Taco restaurant in the Buffalo area. We even encourage employee participation in a variety of community events, such as the JP Morgan Chase Corporate Challenge and the United Way Day of Caring.

We're techies, but that doesn’t mean we can’t play sports!
And to prove it, Synacor has in-house hockey, volleyball, and soccer teams. If those sports aren't up your alley, go ahead and start a softball team or form a golf league. If it's fun we’re up for it!
